This shows the tool which allowed us to make our video black and white

Thursday, 21 April 2016

For the circle effect we used the saturation tool which helped there to be a shimmering effect on Tayla's face similar to the FKA Twigs- Papipacify video.

Final Magazine Advert

Here is my final magazine advert:-

Today I finally managed to finish my magazine advert. From other magazine adverts that I had analysed I added the logo of another one of our record company's. I also decided to add places where the album could be downloaded to try and persuade customers to buy the album on a range of platforms.

Final digipak

Here is our final digipak:

We chose to change the text to white as we thought that it was much easier to read and also fit our theme better. We were also able to add the disc logo to our actual CD. Although you cant clearly see the logo we didn't feel that this was a problem as we didn't want it to be the main focus of the CD.

We also included the record label logo on the CD, this was created by using the True Lies font by Jonathan S. Harris. This font was found on the website DaFont and allowed us to use it for personal use meaning we could overcome any copyright issues.

To create synergy between our digipak and music video, we used still shots taken from some of our edited footage. We chose shots that we felt best reflected themes from our album such as confusion and inner conflict. On the inner panel we chose to use three different pictures of our protagonist in different effects to represent her inner struggle with herself.

More Digipak Analysis'

I chose to analyse some digipaks from outside of my chosen genre such as Rihanna's digipak, as I really liked the close up images and colour theme and felt that I could use it as inspiration for my final digipak.

Digipak- Draft 1

Today we finished the first draft for our digipak. We thought that it would be best to make the text for the front cover red to represent femininity, however on the dark grey background, the red is quite hard to read. We hope to change the text to white as we think it will be a lot easier to read and it will also correlate with the monochrome colour palette shown in the music video.

Also through research we noticed that most digipak discs have the disc sign and the digipak front cover usually shows the record labels logo.In the next few days we hope to make these changes to our draft so that our final digipak can be produced

Digipak:- Front cover

Today we went into school to try and complete our digipak front cover. We started off using adobe Photoshop however we found it hard to use, so once we had edited our picture we moved over to PowerPoint. We also used an online background remover called edit photos for free (http://editphotosforfree.com/photoapps/remove-background-from-image-online/). Although this website was really simple to use, it removed the background poorly leaving us with white specs. PowerPoint was also hard to use as we couldn't find the font we downloaded on there so we had to type it on Photoshop and then copy it into PowerPoint. We hope to go back into school this week and finish our digipak cover so that we can start or the back and side. Here is a picture from during the day:

More Magazine Advert Analysis!

I analysed a range of digipaks from different genres as I didn't want to specifically conform to the Indie genre alone. By subverting from the Indie genre, and conforming to elements of other genres e.g. Rap, it could help my magazine advert stand out from other Indie magazine adverts which could persuade more people to buy the album.

Showcase evening!

Today we had our showcase evening which we felt went really well. After showing our music video we went round and asked some of the audience members questions relating to the music video e.g. what they liked/didn't like, did they understand the plot etc. Also during the viewing the audience was given a questionnaire sheet to fill out. Over the next few weeks we hope to evaluate this feedback to see what went well and would could be improved if we were to make our music video again. Overall we're really pleased with what we managed to produce and glad we could achieve this in time for the deadline!

Final Music Video!

Here's our final version of our music video! We have our showcase evening on Monday which we've been preparing for, so hopefully we're able to get some audience feedback which we can use to help us with our evaluation.

Editing Complete!

We FINALLY finished editing today! Were all so relieved and now we can focus more on completing our digipak and magazine advert for our music video.

Year 12 audience feedback

Today Tara and myself were editing during lunchtime and the year 12's had a lesson in the next period, so we though that this would be a perfect opportunity to get some audience feedback! We showed them our music video on iMovie and recorded their reactions using photo booth, and then asked them a few questions to help us improve our music video before we exported the final version for our showcase.

Second Draft!

Today we uploaded our second draft. We made many of the changes rthat were stated in the first drafy e.g. add flickering bulb shots and introduction, however there a still a few bits that we need to fic e.g. the lip syncing in the circle shots. Our deadline is tomorrow so we are staying after school again today to ensure that everything is completed!

Digipak Image

Today we looked through our raw footage for still shots and thought that these two would be the most effective:

This is because we feel that the blurred element of these shots presented our music videos main theme of inner conflict and confusion. Also we felt that these shots conformed to the typical indie genre digipaks by having simplistic but powerful images that are sometimes based in a rural background, similar to the second picture. In the next upcoming weeks we hope to decide on an image and finish creating our digipak!

Flipped shot

Today whilst editing we decided that it would be effective to flip these shots. This is because we felt that it would make the audience feel confused (just like our protagonist) and show our protaginsts mixed emotions and inner conflict with herself. We achieved this effect by using the 'flip video' tool on iMovie.

First Draft!

Today we were able to produce our first draft! There are still many things that need to be edited such as; lip syncing, changing the size of the circle shots, insert light bulb clip, trim end of running shot 2:32, introduction (artist name and song title), edit fish-eye clips and change the transitions of the circular shots. Also our iMovie keeps on lagging when we try to play our music video which could be due to the many different shots and several transitions and formats that have been used. However, by exporting this clip hopefully we will easily be able to see where the lip syncing is off and try to fix this in iMovie. Our deadline is Friday, so we are staying behind after school to ensure it all gets done!

Final Filming Day:- Last shots!

Today we filmed the final shot for our music video in the school toilets. We tried filming in the students toilets, however did not feel like this was a good location because we wanted to use the toilet mirrors in the shot however they were too small and you could see the reflection of Tara holding the camera in the background! Also it was obvious that it was the school toilets as the cubicles were also present in the mirror background.

To overcome this we decided to film in the teachers toilets instead. The mirror in here was very large and there was only 3 cubicles that were not shown in the mirrors reflection. Also due to the fact that the mirror was so big, it meant that we could capture Tayla, without getting the person filming in the shot aswell.

We chose our ending shot to be Tayla taking off her hood and revealing who she was. We felt that this would be effective because throughout the video you are shown flashes of a hooded figure (representing her demons and conflict) however at the end of the video, this shot reveals that her demons are herself presenting one of our main themes of inner conflict. Here are some still shots we took during the day:

Rhianne and Tayla editing update

Today Tayla and I, had a free period so decided to edit. We have shots with a fish eye-lens that we shot using an iPhone 5s camera. However, the shots came out portrait instead of landscape, so this vlog explains how we aim to overcome this.

Filming Day 8

Today we filmed at the top of the school gym. We managed to shoot some shots of Tayla lip syncing, running and doing other crazy things to represent her inner conflict and struggle. We hope to use the majority of the lip syncing shots for the underdogs part as we want it to be different to the other shots in the music video. However, we still have quite a few blanks so can use some of the running and other non lip syncing shots to fill in these gaps. We also got shot of Tayla walking which we are thinking of inserting in the song where it says "we will walk away from empty gold" so that the lyrics correlate with the visuals (supporting Andrew Goodwin's theory). Here are some still shots from our footage:

Filming day 7

Today we went back into the forest to film. Despite our change in idea, we felt that we still needed to include some forest shots to give a variety of settings as there were too many shots in Tayla's house. We used a fish eye lens which we attached to an iPhone 5s to record the shots. Hannah walked around Tayla (trying to keep a steady hand) and filmed her standing still with a blank visage and also her shaking her head. We only got these shots with Tayla lip synching and without so that we could use them to fill any gaps or as insert shots, ensuring that there we still have a narrative element to our music video. Here are some stills of the footage we got:

We also used Tara's DSLR camera to film Tayla lip syncing the underdogs part. This footage was much clearer than the fish eye lens which was good as it meant that you could clearly see Tayla lip syncing. We filmed her singing the rest of the song also so that we could fill any more gaps that we may have had. Here are some stills from the DSLR footage:

Justin Timberlake-Mirrors

In this video I feel that many mirrors are used to portray Justin Timberlake's  confusion and inner thoughts. We tried to emulate this in our video by constantly referencing mirrors, to represent our protagonists inner conflict. Near the end of the video the opacity changes revealing a woman staring back at him, representing his desires. We also changed the opacity of some of our shots so that the black smoke was visible on top of our protagonist also emphasising our protagonists confusion.

Filming Day 6

Today we were at Tayla's house filming some more shots. We filmed in front of a mirror and in the corner of the summer house. We felt that these locations would be best as they both showed some sort of reflection of Tayla (her mirror reflection and her shadow). We filmed Tayla lip synching the whole song in both locations so that if we were running short of footage and time we could use these shots as  a replacement. We also shot footage of Tayla staring blank at herself in the mirror or directly into the camera to reinforce the theme of inner conflict and inner searching. Here are some stills from the day:

We placed the camera on the tripod in the corner of the room so that we could capture both Tayla and her reflection without including the camera and tripod in the shot.

We also used a tripod in these shots however made it very low so that we could create a slight low angle shot, to enhance the shadows visible. We also used the torches from two phones and shone them at Tayla from different angles, to also create a shadow.

Examples of Magazine adverts for albums

Here are some examples of magazine adverts for albums. On all of the album covers the artists name is clearly displayed, along with a large image of them from waist up emphasising their star image. They all also state a popular song from the artist that is including in the album, in order to gain more sales.
The typical conventions of a magazine advert for music videos include:

music reviews,  extra DVD bonus tracks, magazine reviews from genre, record label name and logo, may have slogan/tagline, debut album, limited edition, tour dates.

In my magazine advert I will try and stick to these conventions in order to help the magazine look more professional and fulfil its purpose.

Taylor Swift- Out of the Woods

I think that this video is very similar to ours in relation to both the story-line and the forest setting used. The story-line of the music video is about the protagonist leaving a boy, so that they could find their true self. This is similar to our story-line as they both share the common theme of moving on however our theme of moving on is to do with age and worries whereas this video is to do with moving on from relationships.

In particular I think that the shot starting at 2:00 is very effective as it confuses the viewers into thinking that she dropped when she is still on the cliff. This sense of confusion among the viewers may help them to understand the story-line better. It is also a main theme in our music video so we could use this as inspiration to try and create a confusing shot, to make it easier for our audience to understand our themes.
